After Prince’s death on April 21st, Billboard Music executives sat in a room brainstorming how to properly honor the late legend at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards. About this time they received a phone call from Madonna’s people informing them Madonna had been very touched by the loss and wanted to honor her friend.

But many Prince fans were not pleased with the decision, with one man starting an online petition.

Madonna and Prince are believed to have dated in the min 80’s and collaborated on “Love Song” for Madonna’s 1989 album Like a Prayer.  The relationship took a turn for the worse according to Rolling Stone, which referred to several instances of Madonna referring to Prince as a “little troll.” It went on to say a decades long feud ended in 2011.

The award show’s Executive Producer, Mark Bracco would not budge. “Listen, I think everybody is entitled to their opinion and everyone can have their own opinion, but I will say that we are honored and could not be more excited for Madonna to be on the show and to pay tribute to someone that was her friend and her peer and her colleague,” he said. “I think it is going to be fantastic.”

Both Madonna and Prince were 57 years old at the time of Prince’s death.
