You don’t ordinarily associate Dame Helen Mirren with the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, which involves a team of race car drivers who specialize in spectacular auto chases and intricate heists. However, as the EconoTimes notes, Mirren has joined the cast of “Fast 8,” the latest in the long-running series of action movies headlined by Vin Diesel.

Mirren, age 71, has done Shakespeare, has played both Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth 2, an elegant British assassin in “Red” and “Red 2,” and Nicolas Cage’s mother in the second “National Treasure” movie. “Fast 8” will be her first full-blown action film, even though she is reported to have been on the set just a day, making her role little more than a cameo, though it may be a setup for the ninth movie.

Little is known about what she plays in “Fast 8.” She expressed disappointment that she would not be behind the wheel, since she always wanted to play a “mad driver.’ Ironically, she claims that she may be the only member of the cast who can drive a car with a stick-shift, having appeared on “Top Gear.” The cast, besides Diesel, also includes such action stars as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

“Fast 8,” which is filming at locations in the United States, Cuba, and Iceland, is due to be released in April 2017.
