How Alexander Skarsgard Got in Shape for Tarzan
If the latest 2016 version of Tarzan looks a bit familiar but can’t quite be placed, that’s okay. You can be forgiven. Yes, you have seen this actor before; he is Alexander Skarsgard. He has carried a number of roles on various cable TV shows including True Blood, Generation Kill, and even a bit role in Zoolander. However, the fitness regimen that Skarsgard had to partake for his Tarzan role as well as the longer hair do clearly changed his looks to the point of giving Skarsgard an impression of being a brand new actor no one had seen before. The familiar yet different look fits the movie; it’s plotline involves a continuation of the Tarzan story with the King of the Apes returning back to the jungle after years of being in civilization and among his original aristocratic family. The movie is as much about the character returning to his true nature as it is about reliving a legend. Skarsgard spent at least four months in a high performance exercise program to give his body the chiseled look needed for the movie and gained about 25 pounds doing so (which makes one wonder how the character maintained his physique being years away from the jungle and buried in fatty British food and living). In any case, Skarsgard is well overdue for his own lead role. He’s been playing support and bit roles for years, which is why his face is so familiar but hard to place.
