Franklin Pierce served as President between 1853 and 1857. He was one of the youngest legislators ever, elected to the New Hampshire government at the tender age of 24. Pierce served as President when the Kansas-Nebraska Act was ratified. This law completely destroyed the Compromise of 1850 and put the United States on the brink of Civil War.
