Every four years, in the final stretch of the presidential campaign, the presidential candidates take a break from their schedules to attend the Alfred E. Smith dinner, a white-tie event where they roast themselves and each other while raising money for Catholic charities.
Usually, this event serves as a short ‘truce’ of sorts between the candidates; however, as it was it has been in so many ways, this year was an exception.
In this dinner, who took place last month, republican candidate Donal J. Trump was booed for his tasteless remarks made in front of the attendees, which included catholic leaders, reporters and of course, democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Among the many things the Trump said, this perhaps stands as what prompted his public to humiliate him in such fashion:
“Hillary believes it’s vital to deceive the people by having one public policy, and a totally different policy in private. That’s OK. I don’t know who they’re angry at, Hillary, you or I? For example, here she is tonight in public, pretending not to hate Catholics. The media is even more biased this year than ever before. Ever. You want the proof? Michelle Obama gives a speech, and everyone loves it, it’s fantastic; they think she’s absolutely great. My wife Melania gives the exact same speech and people get on her case. And I don’t get it! I don’t know why.”
